Once a private art instructor, Mia Choumenkovitch never dreamed she would teach art to inmates. It all started in the 1970s when a friend asked her to teach an art class at Lorton -- the D.C. prison in Virginia. She said yes, but there was a condition. She agreed to design the program and then have it turned over to the corrections department so that they could find instructors. Fast forward to 2010, and Mia is still teaching art to her “guys”, whom she says treat her like a mother.
